Dune Hai is a California based firm with services that include landscape architecture, garden design and planting design for residential, hospitality and commercial spaces. Our work on a project begins with concept generation all the way through construction administration.

We expand the meaning of high-end contemporary design to elevate simple materials and details and artistically incorporate cross-cultural aesthetics.

Our Process

Begin With What You Have

Every site has existing assets to leverage whether they are existing trees, a retaining wall needing a facelift or a pile of unused bricks. We find the work most exciting when we keep something from the sites previous life as a way to layer histories while we sustainably (and economically) keep what we can.

Design for the User

The user is our priority. How the space is used or viewed or managed is paramount in our process. We believe stewardship of the landscape is important for a thriving ecology and if the user is absent from not having that emotional connection to the space, we haven’t done our job.

Bend to the Climate

There are a lot of adjustments that can be made in a garden but the climate and existing wildlife is not among them. Our plant palettes are highly tailored to their placement in the garden as we consider sun exposure, water availability and aesthetics. We design for the many microclimates on a site and for the inevitable animal visitors that we want to encourage or discourage.

Create Something Inspiring

We are artists at heart and landscape design is our medium. Our process is driven by artistic expression and a love for design. Every project is an opportunity for us to push our creativity and invent something new.
